Baxter Park: Nature and architecture combine in this fine city park

Gifted to the city by the wealthy Baxter family in 1863, the park was laid out by one of the great innovators and achievers of the 19th Century, Sir Joseph Paxton, and the pavilion was designed by his son in law, George Henry Stokes.

In the middle of its 38 acres is a glass-fronted Italianate pavilion that has been beautifully restored and is a popular wedding venue.
Bonfire Night sees 10,000 people flock to the park for a fireworks display.
